Forms turned on Lathe, 2003. These turned wood figures (formed on a lathe) are a few of many forms were made as Jesse English contemplated individualism. He was working with a minimalist approach. At this point in the series, he was developing feminine and masculine curves, attempting to give a full persona with as little information as possible
Tall Things, painting 2004.
Though I have spent years as a muralist in Little Rock AR, and years as
a scenic artist in Dallas TX, some how I have trouble gaining a high
level of satisfaction with painting. It may be simply the confining
aspect that is intrinsic to two dimensions. This painting, Tall Things, I believe, is distinct in my mind from so many other paintings I have done because of a few simple reasons. Firstly, Tall Things was
done as a test of theories about glazes. This removed any perceived
need for purpose in terms of subject matter. I simply collected a set
of images that relate in height, allowing myself and the viewer to fill
in gaps of narration as she / he wishes. This absence of cohesion in
the painting also allowed for multiple styles, such as the tornado
being so stylized; and it allowed for layering of literal ‘place’
without clear purpose. The freedom of content on all levels is what,
for me, brought this work closest to the freedom I perceive in
sculpture.
